St Sophia Cathedral in Polatsk is an old Christian church and one of the most famous architectural monuments in Belarus. It was built according to the canons of Byzantine architecture on the right bank of the Western Dzvina in the mid-11th century. However, in 1710 an explosion inflicted extensive damage to the cathedral. Several decades later it was rebuilt in the Vilna Baroque style by Johann Christoph Glaubitz. To this day the cathedral’s elegant architecture has been attracting the attention of artists eager to reflect its beauty in their works.
The work by Ivan Dmukhayla (1914–2007), Belarusian lyrical landscape artist, depicts the celebrated cathedral as a natural part of the landscape of the Western Dzvina’s right bank.
The exhibition will be on display until 5 May.
