The retrospective exhibition ‘Valery Shkarubo (1957–2020). In Memoriam’ opens at 5.00 pm on the grand gallery in the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus on January 27, 2023.

The exhibition is dedicated to the memory and 65th anniversary of the birth of Valery Shkarubo, the outstanding Belarusian artist. His works are well known both in Belarus and abroad. The artist worked in the genre of landscape painting. He developed the traditions of realistic art in his work. His paintings are distinguished by high professionalism. They combine the subtlety of the poetic perception of nature with a deep lyrical and philosophical content.

Valery Shkarubo was born in Borisov in 1957. He studied at the Belarusian State Theater and Art Institute (now the Belarusian State Academy of Arts) in 1976–1981. He is a member of the Union of Artists of Belarus since 1989. He was awarded the medal ‘For Merit in the Fine Arts’ in 2000. He is a laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus (2002). The artist is the Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Belarus (2014). Valery Shkarubo’s personal art gallery was opened in Borisov in 2015. He is awarded the Order of Francysk Skaryna (2020).

The artist’s works are a kind of hymn to the nature of Belarus. The geography of his solo exhibitions is extremely wide. They were successfully held not only in Belarus, but also in prestigious museums and galleries in Russia, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, China, and Japan. In addition, he took part in cultural events held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus abroad. His works were displayed at the UN headquarters in New York, at exhibitions of Belarusian artists in the European Parliament, at the exhibition at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. He participated in the cultural program during the visit of the President of the Republic of Belarus to China, the Days of Belarusian Culture in France and Italy; his solo exhibition took place as part of the ongoing events dedicated to the Day of Minsk in Bonn. The works of Valery Shkarubo were exhibited at the 51st Venice International Art Biennale in 2005. He participated in the exhibition of Belarusian painting at the Pierre Cardin Center in Paris, in Japanese Sendai (sister city of Minsk), in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, in the ‘Minsk-Paris-Minsk’ Exhibition at the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the exhibition of contemporary Belarusian and Russian artists in Moscow, as well as in the exhibition as part of the Belarusian Investment Forum in London.

The museum’s exhibition will present about 55 works from the collection of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the National Center for Contemporary Arts, the Minsk City History Museum and OJSC ‘Priorbank’, as well as from the collection of the artist’s family.

 

The curator of the exhibition is Aleksey Matyushonok, a scientific employee of the Exhibition Department in the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus

 

The exhibition runs until April 2, 2023
