Arts and crafts are part of culture, a reflection of a certain way of life. This is true both for established masterpieces inspired by well-known religious and philosophical concepts, and for works created primarily for everyday purposes. Even simpler objects are made using certain technologies and with masterful execution typical of a culture, and the constants of its worldview.
Everyday objects (folding screens, vases, tea services and elements of costume) present a nation’s essence, its social foundations. Behind these things we can see the “face” of the person who created them or surrounded his life with them. After all, the objects that accompany us throughout our lives bear our personal imprint.
The exhibition showcases the everyday aspects of life in traditional China, its essence and diversity.
The exhibition includes more than 80 works from the collection of Asian arts and crafts of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, made in various mediums and techniques (wood carving, lacquer painting, porcelain, embroidery). The items on display date from the 17th to the 21st centuries.
A number of exhibits have never been displayed to the public before.
The exhibition’s programme will include lectures and workshops.
The exhibition “Portrait of a Nation. The Arts and Crafts of China” will be on display from 11 April to 1 June, 2025 in the exhibition building (24 K. Marx St., 3rd floor, hall 1).
Exhibition curator: Bagdana Tupchyenka, junior researcher at the Foreign Art Department of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.
