Please accept as a gift...

The National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus Main building

‘Please accept as a gift’ is an off-the shelf phrase with which, completed in the prescribed form, an application begins with a donation to the museum. This bureaucratic phrase means the disinterestedness and generous impulse of individuals or institutions that enrich the collections of the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus as the nation’s spiritual treasury.

Gifts are one of the main sources for the making and richness of the museum’s collections. Over the past 20 years, the museum has received 4,972 exhibits free of charge. All gifts are strained: only valuable and necessary works of art for the museum are accepted. Donation is a flexible and successful, although an unpredictable way of funds acquisition. Due to the gifts, over the past 30 years the museum has been enriched with works by Ernst Neizvestny, Marc Chagall, Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya, Paul Klee, Mikhail Shemyakin, Boris Zaborov, graphic architect Iosif Langbard, Napoleon Orda, Pyotr Sergievich, Vitaliy Tsvirko, Leonid Shchemelyov and many other Belarusian artists.

The jubilee exhibition presents over 170 works from several collections, selected according to several criteria. They seemed to be the most attractive, artistically significant, diverse, common to the time and significant for the art of sovereign Belarus. The museum’s function is to preserve the national cultural memory, the formation of the nation’s identity and unity in Europe and the world on the whole. The gratuitous donation of works of art to the National Art Museum, in addition to budget savings, is a deliberate civil act, an active public position and the nation’s consolidation that shows concern building and preserving of the country’s culture.

The National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus thanks heartily all donators provided invaluable help not only to the National Art Museum, but to the Belarusian society in general.
