Uladzimir Charnyshou was born on 15 December 1939 in the Penza region. After finishing school in 1955, he entered the Savitsky Penza Art School. Having had successfully graduated in 1960, he went on to study at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), ArtsFaculty (1962–1968).
After his graduation from VGIK in 1968, the artist was assigned to the Belarusfilm studio in Minsk. Among Uladzimir Charnyshou’s best films as a production designer are: “Trofim Glushkov, Red Agitator”, “The Big Hill” (award winner of the Tallinn Film Festival for Children and Youth), “Family Circumstances”, “Notes of a Young Doctor” (based on the work by Mikhail Bulgakov).
From 1995 to 2001, he served as chief production designer at the Maxim Gorky National Academic Drama Theatre. During his tenure, he designed 13 productions, the best of which are “The Exodus” and “The Ravaged Nest” (based on the works of Yanka Kupala), “In the Twilight”(by Aliaksei Dudarau), “The Human Cry” (two-part play), “The Robber Brothers” (based on the work by Friedrich Schiller), and many others.
From 1996 to 2003 the artist taught at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts and the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts (Associate Professor).
Uladzimir Charnyshou is a member of several public associations: the Belarusian Union of Artists, the Belarusian Union of Film Workers and the Belarusian Union of Theatre Workers.
The paintings and graphic works on display come from the artist’s collection and the collection of the National History Museum of the Republic of Belarus. They represent a best-of retrospective of Uladzimir Charnyshou’s designs for various theatre and cinema productions.
The exhibition will be on display until 24 August 2025.
