The tradition of observing Border Guards Day on 28 May started in 1958, back when Belarus was part of the USSR. It was on this day in 1918 when the Council of People’s Commissars established the Border Guards of the RSFSR. On this day we celebrate the soldiers who serve on the border with dignity and honour, and commemorate those who at the cost of their own lives defended every inch of their homeland during the Great Patriotic War.
The exhibition aims to showcase the heroic image of soldiers who selflessly devote their lives to guarding the state border, their everyday lives with the help of expressive means of fine arts.
The exhibition will present: the painting “At the Borders of Our Homeland” (1965) by Uladzimir Pasyukevich (1931–2009), Honoured Artist of the BSSR; watercolour and gouache drawings by Honoured Artists of the BSSR Leu Leytman (1896–1974) (“Portrait of Border Guard Mikhail Karamzin” (1964), “Brothers in Arms” (1964)) and Mikalai Tarasikau (1908–1965) (“Courtyard of a Border Outpost” (1962), “A Moment of Silence” (1962), as well as the sculpture “Border Guard” (1953) by Ivan Grodnikau (1917–1955 (?).
These artists’ own wartime experiences, the memories of how the enemy’s attack was held back by the border troops, imbue their depictions of border guards with a special resilience and courage.
